Leeds Castle in Kent, England, has been called the "loveliest castle in the world". Listed in the Domesday Book, this castle has been a Norman stronghold, a royal residence and a royal palace. It's situation is stunning, set on two islands in a magnificent lake.

It has experienced battles, witnessed intrigue, entertained and solaced leaders of men, inspired countless artists and now provides a place of fascination and enjoyment to half a million visitors of all ages each year.

Originally a Saxon fortress, built in AD 857, Leeds Castle was rebuilt in stone by the Normans and later converted to a Royal Palace by Henry VIII. Now lovingly restored, it houses a magnificent collection of furnishings, tapestries and paintings.

The last owner of Leeds Castle was the indomitable Lady Baillie who bought the castle in 1926 and employed French interior designers to transform her new home. She dedicated most of her life to the improvement of the Castle and was responsible for setting up the Leeds Castle Foundation.  The Castle was opened to the public in 1976.

The castle was a royal residence for six of England's medieval queens and a palace of Henry VIII. Much of the castle was restored and rebuilt in the 19th century, and many of the lavishly decorated rooms are open to the public.

Ramsgate’s maritime history is decked with honour. Its harbour was granted ‘royal’ status in 1821 – in recognition of the hospitality given to King George IV when he sailed from Ramsgate with the Royal Squadron on his way to Hanover.

Today the rich vein of sea-faring blood that runs through the town is celebrated in its new marina, working harbour and golden sands. Its maritime past is waiting to be discovered, too, in a specially dedicated museum in the seafront clockhouse.

Ramsgate is alive with the sights of a town enjoying its regeneration while the sound of the wind can still be heard whistling through the rigging of the hundreds of boats that nestle within the sheltering arm of the harbour wall.
